Also, never run an outboard without water available to be sucked into the engine’s cooling system. That can melt the water pump impeller’s fins in seconds.

Another simple and inexpensive repair is to have the battery checked regularly. A good quality battery should last a long time but can degrade over time. Inspect the terminals for corrosion and clean them with a wire brush, baking soda and water solution. Also, the propeller should be removed and inspected. Fishing line wrapped around the drive shaft can eat away at seals, and it’s a good idea to grease the propeller spline if needed.
